St. Matthew
Saint Matthew, also known as Levi, was one of the Twelve Apostles chosen by Jesus. Before becoming an apostle, Matthew was a tax collector, which made him unpopular among the Jews, as tax collectors were seen as collaborators with the Roman oppressors. However, Jesus called Matthew to follow Him, and Matthew left everything to become His disciple. After Jesus' Ascension, Matthew preached the Gospel and is traditionally believed to have written the Gospel of Matthew, one of the four canonical Gospels. He is revered as a saint and martyr, although details of his martyrdom are uncertain. Saint Matthew is often depicted holding a book or a quill, symbolizing his role as a Gospel writer.
