St. Ignatius of Loyola
Saint Ignatius of Loyola was a Spanish Basque priest and theologian who, after being seriously wounded in battle, underwent a profound spiritual conversion. He founded the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) and became its first Superior General. Ignatius is best known for his spiritual writings, especially the Spiritual Exercises, a guide to meditation, prayer, and discernment of spirits. The Jesuits became known for their missionary work, education, and intellectual contributions. Ignatius is revered as a saint for his dedication to the Church and his promotion of a disciplined spiritual life.
