Born into a wealthy family in Turin, Italy, Pier Giorgio was known for his devotion and piety. He dedicated his life to works of social action, charity, prayer, and community, becoming an active member of multiple Catholic youth and student groups. Despite his family’s wealth and power, his father limited his children’s spending money. Even so, Pier Giorgio generously donated what little he had to those in need.
When he died of polio at age 24, his family was astonished to see the streets filled with thousands of mourners. Soon after, the poor from all over the city petitioned the Archbishop to begin his cause for canonization. St. John Paul II fittingly called him “The Man of the Beatitudes.”
