Born in Poland to a humble family, Saint Faustina Kowalska felt a strong religious calling and joined the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy. Her life became intimately connected to the Divine Mercy devotion in February 1931 when she reported a transformative vision. During this vision, Jesus Christ appeared to her, revealing the iconic Divine Mercy image. In it, Jesus was depicted with His right hand raised in blessing, His left hand on His chest, and two rays, one red and one pale, emanating from His heart, symbolizing the sacraments of the Eucharist and Reconciliation, as well as God's boundless mercy. Jesus instructed Saint Faustina to have this image painted, spread devotion to Divine Mercy, and establish Divine Mercy Sunday—the Sunday after Easter—as a special feast of mercy in the Church. The image bears the message "Jezu, ufam tobie," which means "Jesus, I Trust in You" in Polish and can be seen on the bottom of our sock.
